Simhat Torah

Simhat Torah is connected to the fall festival of Sukkot and was added as the last day of Sukkot in the 10th century. The holiday is about the ending and the beginning of the yearly Torah reading cycle and is celebrated with an evening of hakafot (parades) and morning of singing and dancing, in honor of the Torah.  For the Jewish people, the Torah is the most treasured possession. It contains history, law and values, and it details our relationship with God.

Sukkot

The Festival of Sukkot begins on Tishri 15, the fifth day after Yom Kippur.

A sukkah  is a temporary hut constructed for use during Sukkot.

It is topped with branches and often well decorated.

The Book of Vayyiqra  describes it as a symbolic shelter, commemorating the time God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness they inhabited after they were freed from slavery in Egypt.

Yom Kippur

The ten day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is known as the “Ten Days of Repentance.” Judaism teaches that it is the responsibility of every person to reflect about his or her actions, take responsibility for those times when he or she “missed the mark,” apologize for or in other ways fix what was done by these actions, and do the “inner work”  to ensure that this behavior won’t occur again.  In other words, this time is about our own growth.

At school, an emphasis of the High Holy Days is to develop an awareness of our own actions while considering the feelings of others. We can help children to understand that a simple apology is one way that we value the feelings of friends and family.

Jonah and the Whale

This week we are learning about Yom Kippur.

Inspired by the story of Jonah we reused plastic bottles to make a whale.

The project helped us to act out the story.
